I surrender

 I Surrender

Head bowed and a characterless face,

I’m going to my in-laws’ place.

Now someone’s commands I live under,

I surrender, I surrender.

I’m just a girl of twelve,

I want to smile and play,

But soon in darkness I’ll dwell,

And today is that day.

I never bent in front of others,

Look up I would rather,

And now I follow a man,

Who I am way younger than?

I never thought I would be so dependent,

I am extremely repentant.

When my husband will die,

I need to bid you goodbye.

You have left me with no voice,

You have left me with no choice,

Once we finish circling this fire,

It’s only freedom I desire.

I’ve lost all hope,

Even to escape I need a rope,

Now someone’s commands I live under,

I surrender, I surrender.

Hello everyone!!
As I announced on the Instagram page, we had an Inter-clan competition in our school. We call the houses 'clans'
There are four clans:
  1. Apollo
  2. Posiedon
  3. Demeter
  4. Zeus
Yes, they are named after Greek Gods. I am in the clan Apollo.
This year, we had an online competition in our school on the occasion of Environmental and Independence day, and I recited this poem!

Apollo Ranked second, but in the eighth grade we won :)

Writer's note- Okie, it has been ages since I wrote this poem. I have been busy with exams, and a lot more, so I did not get time to publish this.

The poem is about a 12 year old girl who is getting married to a man way older to her. She talks about the emotional trauma she faces as she digests the fact that she is no longer free. That her life depends on weather her husband lives.

The eighth graders of Apollo were depicting Freedom Fighters, one of them being Raja Ram Mohan Roy, who was against the act of sati.

Read on,
Aanya :)
